Description

You get your haircut. It is yours, and yours alone. It is both feminine and masculine, neither and both all at once. Wall is one of the most influential practitioners of tableau photography. This often involves directing actors on elaborately constructed sets in the manner of film production. The central figure in this staged scene is captured at the height of a violent emotional outburst. The viewer is left to imagine the narrative surrounding this frozen moment.(11/08/2011-27/11/2011) Take the A22 to Eastbourne, go across the Bishop roundabout to the A271 and follow the signs to Bexhill and the seafront. The De La Warr Pavilion is on the Marina. In the second section, these inactive forms transmute into bodies at work. Photographs show labourers in factories and mills, bent over the machines. In one, by an unknown artist, a woman appears enmeshed behind a loom, as the thread criss-crosses diagonally across the frame. These lines extend in other images of fields scored by ploughs and scenes of polar explorations of the early 1900s, including Edward Adrian Wilson’s delicate, ghostly drawings of icebergs. In conjunction with the exhibition and in collaboration with the artist, The Contemporary Austin has unveiled a new public mural of Holzer’s IN A DREAM… text on the museum’s downtown building façade. In addition, the exhibition features a new augmented reality work by artist Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley, which the museum commissioned in partnership with Meta Open Arts, as well as a new outdoor sculpture commission by Clare Rojas for the Laguna Gloria sculpture park.

You expect a store, but instead, you are led to an unassuming house in the suburbs. A garage filled with separate containers of water, each accompanied by their own halfmoon betta fish. You stare at the wall. And again, unexpectedly, it takes just a few seconds, and you know which one is yours. They are moving with and against the water, shooting up, and sliding down again. I own all of their books, "Dream Girl" being my favourite. I think I was looking for "In a Dream You Saw a Way to Survive" to make me feel like "Dream Girl" did. And why wouldn't it! The title is a damn Holzer truism for crying out loud. The cover is gorgeous. The exhibition is designed to create an immersive experience for the viewer, in which works are connected associatively, with ‘the slippery, fugitive logic of a dream’. Price has staged the exhibition as ‘an austere melodrama’ exploring the psychological and formal power of the horizontal, in a vast repertoire of images depicting the reclining or recumbent body in varying states of weariness, stupor, reverie, grief, death, erotic transport and languor. The exhibition includes sculptures, drawings, photographs, films and videos, arranged in four loosely threaded sections: Sleeping, Working, Mourning and Dancing.I always say that my brain is such a chaotic place to be in, and this book had shown me it's not just mine. This book is pure brilliance that I could not put it down. In a Dream You Saw a Way to Survive is a two-part collection that synthesizes some tough material into a well-curated examination of survival, trauma, heartbreak, grief, and hope. Von Radic runs the gamut of common themes explored in contemporary poetry so when I began reading the collection, I worried that they wouldn’t have anything new to say. Ultimately, Part I did not distinguish itself to me. Part II, on the other hand, PART II. The collection is actually more successful when it discusses subjects unrelated to romance. For instance, “A Conversation Between My Therapist and the Mouth That Sometimes Belongs to Me” dances around the edges of mania and mental health with unexpected perspectives and development. It demands a second read and unfolds with examination. “Still We Swing” draws on nearly cliché nostalgic beats of adventurous high school summers, but captures all the cathartic angst of “Our dirty scramble of discount limbs… A scream where a family should be.” “Post-term” discusses abortion with incredible brevity and language like “[I] became a pregnant hollow. A swelling brood of Absence” and “I open my mouth and her hands fall out.” The next poem in the collection, “To the Protester Outside the Clinic Who Called Me a Murderer” also presents an impactful perspective on loss and desire but is also an example of a piece that would almost certainly perform better spoken than read.

Sufja was a name you had talked about with your ex as the name you would give the child you would have together. You know now that that dream was always yours, and yours alone. But maybe Sufja was always meant to be for this little creature, getting you through these long isolated days, swimming through life in similar ways as you. And then you remember. The book you wrote in sixth grade called The Boy and the Fish, a very romantically-inclined friendship between a boy violinist named Matt and his best friend, Cappy. You remember that you wanted to be a marine biologist after you first touched a dolphin at Sea World. The blurb of the book delivered 100%. The collection mainly talks about loss, heartbreak, abuse, mental health and healing.

I quite liked most of the poems in this collections. They deal with mental health, love, loss, social interactions, relationships and family. They are well written, the layout is interesting and the honesty in which issues are presented is raw yet rewarding: you can survive, life can be good.

Because wow, what a beauty. The words inside were incredibly beautiful as well. This grey-clamshell cloth box with foil-stamped lettering was part of a portfolio created to raise funds for the not-for-profit organization Photographers + Friends United Against AIDS. The portfolio was titled "In a Dream", inspired by this poetic slogan of Holzer's. It also included editioned photographs by eleven other artists including Jeff Wall, Thomas Ruff, James Welling, Sarah Charlesworth, and Andres Serrano.
